Crayon Resist

Simple and fun. Kids are intrigued by the outcome of this one.

Supplies:
Paper plate
Colored pencils
Black crayon
Etching tools (forks, toothpicks, fingernails ;))

Directions:
Color the plate with the colored pencils. Usually teachers suggest doing the rainbow, but it really is up to the kids. Just make sure that they are not putting it on too thick because it may not be the color they want.
Go over the colors with a black crayon. It doesn't matter how thick this is, but no color should be visible through the black.
Draw a design or picture with the etching tool(s) and see how the color comes through the black!

I don't know why this amazes kids so much. Maybe it takes them longer than we realize to get over peek-a-boo. I know when I would do it, I would try and remember where the "good" colors were so that they would show up in the right place on my picture.

Have your charges done this? Have you?
